CHAPTER 1 — Wrong Kind of Fast (Rewrite)

The Afterlife didn’t change for noise.

Didn’t care about rumors.

It only shifted when something didn’t fit.

Ace felt it before Rogue spoke.

Not a sound.

A gap.

Conversations still moved—

but they bent around them.

Not avoidance.

Space.

Like something had already passed through here—

and left a shape behind it.

“This one’s off,” Rogue said.

No greeting.

No lead-in.

Good.

Ace stopped at the counter.

“Explain.”

Rogue didn’t reach for a shard.

Not yet.

She watched them first.

Measured.

“You ever see someone finish something before they start it?” she asked.

V blinked.

“…that’s not how time works.”

Rogue didn’t look at them.

“Yeah,” she said.

“…that’s the problem.”

She finally pulled a shard up—

set it down.

Didn’t slide it.

Mai picked it up.

Data unfolded—

images, timestamps, angles—

all clean.

Too clean.

She paused on the first frame.

A body mid-motion.

Not reacting.

Not bracing.

Just—

not there yet.

She flicked to the next.

Weapon still holstered.

Moment wrong.

Then another.

And another.

Each one just slightly ahead of where it should have been.

“This isn’t speed,” she said.

Rogue leaned back.

“No.”

Mai didn’t look up.

“It’s out of order.”

A small pause.

“Effect before cause.”

V shifted.

“…yeah, I don’t like that.”

Ace didn’t touch the shard.

“Target.”

Rogue tapped the counter.

Once.

“Not loud,” she said.

“No build.”

“No pattern you can chase.”

Ace’s gaze narrowed slightly.

“He’s not hunting.”

Rogue shook her head.

“He’s not chasing either.”

A beat—

shorter this time.

“He’s already there.”

That landed harder.

Shammy shifted her stance.

The air tightened—

not heavy—

off-balance.

“He doesn’t wait for things to happen,” she said.

Rogue’s eyes flicked to her.

“…no,” she said quietly.

“…things catch up to him.”

That was worse.

Mai slowed on a frame.

Zoomed in.

The image degraded slightly—

but the detail held.

Side profile.

Head turned just enough—

And there—

at the temple—

something wrong.

Not chrome.

Not implant.

Black—

but not surface.

Like a piece missing.

It didn’t reflect light.

It erased it.

Mai stilled.

“…that’s not augmentation,” she said.

Rogue didn’t answer right away.

“…client thinks it is,” she said.

A beat.

“I don’t.”

Ace looked at the image.

Once.

That was enough.

“Location.”

Rogue tapped the shard again.

“Same district,” she said.

“Cluster hits.”

She leaned forward slightly.

“He doesn’t stay.”

Another small pause.

“He doesn’t need to.”

V exhaled.

“…so we don’t chase him.”

Rogue nodded once.

“You try, you lose him.”

Silence.

Short.

Ace didn’t hesitate.

“Value.”

“High.”

Of course.

Mai lowered the shard.

Set it down.

“Constraint,” she said.

Not explanation.

Requirement.

Ace turned.

“We go.”

No delay.

No negotiation.

Rogue didn’t stop them.

But as they moved—

“Hey.”

Ace didn’t turn.

“What.”

Rogue’s voice stayed level.

“This isn’t speed.”

A fraction of a pause.

“He just… isn’t where you think he is yet.”

That stuck differently.

They stepped back into the city.

Noise returned—

messy—

imperfect—

late.

And somewhere out there—

in the space between intention and action—

something was already moving—

not faster—

but earlier—

than anything around it

had time

to understand.
