CHAPTER 6 — Aftermath Delay (Rewrite)
The city didn’t notice.
It never did.
By the time anyone got there—
it had already happened.
Not cleaned.
Not contained.
Just—
past the point where it could be changed.
Ace stepped out into the street.
No rush.
No hesitation.
Behind her—
the building stood.
Intact.
Too intact.
Nothing visibly wrong.
Which meant something still was.
Mai followed.
Her gaze moved—
quick—
but not in the same way as before.
Less pause.
Less friction.
Things connected—
too easily.
Shammy stepped out last.
The air settled—
then slipped—
then settled again.
Breathing—
but not perfectly.
“It’s gone,” she said.
Not relief.
Just—checking.
Mai shook her head.
“No.”
A small pause.
“It didn’t hold.”
Different.
V leaned back against the wall.
Exhaled.
“…yeah,” they muttered.
“…that doesn’t make me feel better.”
Ace didn’t answer.
She watched the street.
Flow.
Noise.
Movement.
Everything normal.
Everything slightly late.
“Payment.”
V let out a short breath.
“…already in.”
Of course.
Mai confirmed without looking.
“Received.”
Immediate.
Ace glanced at her.
Just once.
Long enough.
Something in the timing was off.
Not wrong.
Just—
shorter.
Shammy noticed it too.
The air shifted around Mai—
subtle—
like it was trying to keep up.
“You’re thinking faster,” she said.
Mai didn’t deny it.
“Yes.”
Flat.
No hesitation.
Too clean.
V pushed off the wall.
“…so that thing—”
A beat.
“…we done with it?”
Mai didn’t answer.
Because the question didn’t land clean.
Ace did.
“It’s not here.”
A pause.
“That’s enough.”
For now.
They moved.
Not in formation.
Not separate.
Just—
close enough to stay in sync.
The street took them back immediately.
No one looked.
No one ever did.
Somewhere—
in the space between events—
something shifted.
Not the man.
Not the implant.
Something that had been using both.
The pattern didn’t break.
It adjusted.
Quietly.
Ace slowed—
just a fraction.
Barely enough to notice.
“…could’ve been faster,” she said.
Low.
Not to anyone.
Just—there.
Mai didn’t respond.
She didn’t need to.
Shammy felt it.
The air tightened—
then eased.
V glanced sideways.
“…you’re thinking about it.”
Ace didn’t answer.
Because she was.
For the first time—
it wasn’t abstract.
Not an idea.
Not a concept.
Something measurable.
Something that had a shape.
And something—
that had just moved
ahead of them.
Not by much.
Not yet.
But enough
that catching up
was no longer guaranteed.
