CHAPTER 2 — Vertical Entry (Rewrite)

The tower didn’t try to hide.

It didn’t need to.

Glass and steel climbed straight out of the city—
clean lines, no hesitation—

like everything below it had already been accounted for
and filed away as irrelevant.

Ace slowed a fraction before the entrance.

Not stopping.

Just enough to take the measure of it.

“Too clean,” she said.

Mai didn’t look at the structure.

Her gaze moved across invisible layers—

entry vectors, flow patterns, access logic—

the things that decided who got to exist inside a place like this.

“That’s intentional,” she said.

Shammy let out a slow breath.

“…air’s wrong.”

Filtered.

Compressed.

Held in place.

“This place doesn’t breathe.”

V gave a small shrug.

“Yeah,” they said.

“…corpos prefer it that way.”

Ace stepped forward.

The doors opened before she reached them.

Not early.

Not late.

Exactly when they should have.

That was the problem.

Mai’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“No scan.”

V frowned.

“…there should’ve been a delay.”

Ace didn’t slow.

She walked through.

No resistance.

No pause.

The system didn’t process her.

It accepted her.

Like she had always been on the list.

Mai followed—

and felt it.

Not a check.

Not a pass.

A confirmation.

Like stepping into a role that had already been written.

Her voice dropped a fraction.

“…that’s not validation.”

A beat.

“It’s placement.”

Shammy stepped in last.

The air shifted around her—

subtle, but immediate—

like something adjusting its grip.

“It’s moving us,” she said quietly.

“Not blocking.”

V lingered at the threshold.

Didn’t cross.

“…okay, no.”

They looked at the doorway like it might change its mind.

“…that’s not how this is supposed to work.”

Ace glanced back.

“You coming.”

V hesitated.

A fraction too long.

Then stepped through.

The system stalled.

For the first time.

Not long—

just enough to notice.

Then it corrected.

Accepted.

“…yeah,” V muttered.

“…I don’t like that.”

The lobby swallowed sound.

Footsteps didn’t echo.

Voices didn’t carry.

Everything went somewhere—

just not back.

Mai moved slowly, eyes tracking the space.

Symmetry.

Spacing.

Angles.

Everything aligned to a degree that stopped feeling natural.

“This is worse,” she said.

Ace didn’t ask.

“Because it’s complete.”

A small pause.

“No gaps.”

That was the danger.

A security unit turned its head as they passed.

Tracked.

Paused.

Then returned to idle.

No challenge.

No query.

Like it had already decided the outcome.

Ace stopped.

“Again.”

Mai shifted sideways—

just enough to break alignment.

The space reacted.

Not visibly—

but something slipped.

A fraction.

Then snapped back into place.

“It’s compensating,” she said.

Shammy tilted her head slightly.

The air tightened.

Not hostile.

Corrective.

“It wants us where it expects us,” she said.

V looked between them.

“…you’re saying the building is arranging you.”

Mai didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.”

Flat.

Certain.

Ace turned toward the elevators.

“Then we go up.”

No discussion.

The doors opened before she reached them.

Of course they did.

Inside—

no controls.

No prompts.

No delay.

The doors closed.

The lift moved.

Up.

V glanced at the panel.

“…I didn’t touch anything.”

Mai didn’t look.

“It already knows.”

A beat.

“Where we fit.”

Shammy leaned back slightly.

The air pressed in—

not enough to hurt—

just enough to notice.

“It’s tighter higher up,” she said.

Ace gave a small nod.

“Good.”

V let out a quiet groan.

“…you really need a different word for that.”

No one answered.

The elevator didn’t slow.

Didn’t adjust.

Didn’t hesitate.

It moved with quiet certainty—

toward a floor that wasn’t waiting for them—

but had already made room.

And this time—

it wasn’t just letting them in.

It was putting them

exactly where they were supposed to be.
